Yeo Chee Kiong (Singapore):
One Cubic Taiwan (Invited by Taipei City Government, Department of Cultural Affairs) There are more than four hundred thousand south-eastern “fifth group people” (new immigrant spouses and their offspring) in Taiwan, which reflects the variety of ethnic groups in Taiwan. Under the background, Taipei Artist Village invites artists who have south-eastern background to offer multiple culture education to the public through their creations.
Concept of Work Chee Kiong Yeo’s cubic sculpture simplifying “Taiwan” interacts with participants by an interesting game to achieve “equality.” Yeo uses the Chinese calligraphic character ‘black’ as the basic shape to form a black cubic platform that linked up the 16 people. The black platform will consist of 16 podiums of various heights. 16 members wearing black of at least 2 ethnic groups try to fit in and form a perfect cube.
“Equality” among residents from different backgrounds on the land will be redefined through the game, the interview and the conversation. “One Cubic Taiwan” reflects Taiwan’s openness to multiple cultures by suggesting that the residents in this land are equal regardless of their different backgrounds
